Shame on Metacritic and others
8 March 2015 | by zoltankiss-38727 (los angeles) – See all my reviews

This is not just an excellent and entertaining movie, i found many elements as real/istic and present, it is just touched some (maybe) future elements. Neil pulled the maximum out of this story and made it unforgettable as District 9 was.

How ever, my stomach turns upside down when i see the Metacritic or Rotten Tomatoes score, these pathetic sites and their brainless people (called themselves "critics") live amongst us with their nonsense and empty headed, braintumored criticism - sure, this movie has no Beverly Hills and it's "amazing" crowd, no lemonade punch as story, no muscle cars and no muscle people, no worldwide threat to the USA and such. It has something else to say and this is the core of this amazing movie.

Afterall, Chappie has Everything that needs for a unique and must-see movie, sure, it is a target for all those (disgusting) critics who expect the everyday boring lemonade with everyday boring actors and actress.

Shame on Metacritic and Rotten Tomatoes, you guys are not more, than just rotten and brainless second level scribblers.

Violent yet touching.
23 August 2010 | by bearofspades (Korea (Republic of)) – See all my reviews

This movie threatens to be a run-of-the-mill action movie, but manages to create its own identity. The sameness is how it shows most of its bad guys, and there are plenty, as one dimensionally evil. There are children who are put in harm's way, but not gratuitously--for the most part--providing the hero with a chance to be human.

It's very Korean in its thinking, which is always refreshing to me. Saying that, I was surprised by how much it reminded me of TAXI DRIVER. It's not a re-tread by any means, but it almost felt like the director was paying tribute to the earlier film in a couple of scenes. I have no idea if this is true. Most people I have talked to about this movie have never seen the other.

This is an action film and it does not disappoint on that level. Some of it is pretty brutal, but by the finale you will most likely feel that everyone gets what they deserve and, if anything, a few deserved more. This is because they manage to build characters we care about with out slowing down too much. The pacing is nicely done with properly placed comic moments as well. Some of the humor was a bit dark, which was also nice.

What surprised me was how much I cared for the main characters. The child was sweet but not overly so. I'm used to the child being inserted for sentimental or "Ahhhh" effects--like in the first RUSH HOUR--but that is mostly avoided here and it feels much more genuine over all.

There are cruel moments in the film but the film itself did not feel cruel. That is why I liked it. So often films are either mindless, or mean-spirited, and this one avoided these pit-falls.

Why can't they just keep it real?
12 June 2015 | by randymcbeast (United States) – See all my reviews

What is going on with this series? They used to keep it real, true and believable. Now, the fantasy and special effects are eighty percent of the episode. Why do they feel the need to do this? Stop it already! When you keep breaking the trust with the audience or boring them with the abstract, you lose credibility and subsequently frustrate and lose the audience.

The parts of this episode where it was actually real were brilliant. Having Will back is exhilarating and meeting Chief Investigator Pazzi for the first time is simply a joy. Having the two doing scenes together saved the episode and gives me hope.

The series has lost it's way though. It's now just a pretentious pile of poop. Will's visions used to fit well into a real world structure but now the structure has been replaced by misleading abstract diversions, flashbacks, and ridiculous special effects.

Keep it simple. Tell the story. Let the characters work in reality so they can more believably build the suspense and surprise that made it so successful in the first place.

So far, this season is a complete failure. I still have hope though.

I nominate this movie for academy award, movie of the year.
6 June 2015 | by Dmitriy Levitin – See all my reviews

Pitch perfect was one of the best movies if you love acapella, but Pitch Perfect 2, is just as good if not better, and less about romance, and more about humor.

The personalities of each of the bellas is just perfect. The music is top notch.

Anna Kendrick has got to be the cutest non-conformist ever. Its not about being cool, or about being mean to each other through competition, its about being an individual.

I nominate this movie for academy award, movie of the year.

It wont survive Season 1..
26 April 2015 | by Simon Dorian Crowe (Sydney) – See all my reviews

Well.. Only two episodes are gone and I almost fear to know already how this new TVShow will painfully push itself to a very predictable and (why not) ridiculous cliffhanger at the end of the Season that wont more than probably be developed with a (clearly) unnecessary Season 2.

The main characters appeared out of nowhere without any sort of introduction to the audience. Meaning: why should I ever care about any of them? These Characters' lack of soul and identity makes the Show not only very boring, but also senseless to watch. Apocalypse?Messengers? Really?? How is going to end,I wonder....

I don't want to spend many words on the same subject, but I really feel like this Series has lower chances to be renewed than Series like Flash Forward,Camelot,The Event etc ever had in the first place. I'm just saying.

It Follows breathes new life into a dying genre
2 June 2015 | by Andrew Gold (United States) – See all my reviews

This is probably the best horror movie I've seen in the past decade. It Follows is a throwback to classic late '70s - '80s horror films and draws many comparisons to John Carpenter's style, from the music to the cinematography, and rather than appearing like a carbon copy or rehash of Halloween, director David Robert Mitchell executes this odd premise with such flair and finesse that you can't help but be refreshed by its cleverness. Everything about it works, from the brooding pace to the relatable characters, effortlessly sucking you into this gloomy world where STDs can pass on entities that follow you around no matter where you are. This is where most of the suspense comes from, because instead of relying on blood and shock value, It Follows is subtle and thought provoking - you never know where this thing is and it moves so slowly that you don't know when it will appear, and this uncertainty in waiting is what real suspense is all about.

One aspect that stands out, apart from the brilliant writing and directing, is the musical score by Disasterpeace. It's absolutely gorgeous in the most ominous, haunting way you can imagine. It's retro but not dated - heavy on synths and low on bombast, it sets the eerie tone of the movie right from the get-go and elevates the film's effectiveness into the stratosphere. Even as a standalone listen the music is brilliant, but when juxtaposed with the bleak imagery and unnerving atmosphere, it's downright masterful.

It Follows is not an overtly scary movie. It's a slowburner, and the emphasis on mood over jump scares makes it all the more terrifying. The acting is spot-on, the cinematography is glorious, the pacing is perfect - it's a breath of fresh air into the horror genre that has been on life-support for a while now. I can go on and on, but the thing to remember is that It Follows is not for everyone. If you're expecting this to be a paranormal slasher or something of the sort then you probably won't enjoy it. It's purely psychological, and these days, psychological horror is making a huge comeback. Last year we had The Babadook and this year the movie to beat is It Follows. Both movies are by new directors - Jennifer Kent and David Robert Mitchell respectively

which means they have their entire career ahead of them to rejuvenate

the genre to the heights it used to reach. It Follows is a masterpiece in every respect and an absolute must-watch for horror fans that thought the genre was completely drained of originality. I can only imagine where horror will progress from here.

Overall first thoughts
13 June 2015 | by Gilbert Avendano (london, england) – See all my reviews

To sum everything up to start with the campaign for advertising this series was on point. Didn't give too much but gave enough to catch the viewers interest, Opening scene played with my imagination on what possibly could unravel reminded me of another series "Stargate:Atlantis" but in its own unique way. Overall watching the pilot made me feel as if this series could go in many directions! Causing one to ponder on what could possibly happen. A ship full of rogues, trained and ready to kill. Will they stand to have morals or continue the lives they've already made for themselves. Only true issue is will it be short-lived or will it go on to be another hit series for Syfi. One can only wait and see.

A Great Comedy with Vulnerability
12 April 2015 | by A-L-Ourson (United States) – See all my reviews

I went into this film thinking that it would be just a dumb comedy, which I happen to love; however, the film exceeded my expectations. It does have funny stupid humor, but there is also an unexpected vulnerability in the two main characters.

Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart both portray good guys that are in bad situations. Kevin Hart's character, Darnell, has his own business, but bad credit and lack of savings keeps him and his family living in a rough area. Will Ferrell's character, James, has it all--beautiful fiancée, tons of money, lovely house. Sadly, James is framed for embezzlement and is sentenced to 10 years in a maximum security prison. Darnell, for a price, becomes James' tutor for prison life and hilarity ensues.

Even more than hilarity, James and Darnell start to genuinely care for each other. Their bromance is one for the books. The two actors have great chemistry and an awesome height difference. I would totally watch another movie with these two, especially if Will Ferrell does Capoeira again.

I also give points for originality. I have seen a ton of movies in my life, but none were someone gets tutored for prison. Plus, the tutorial is so elaborate and well planned.

Based on chemistry, comedy, creativity, and Capoeira, I definitely recommend this film!
