Not a bad start
13 June 2015 | by Tommy Dee (Spain) – See all my reviews

Not a bad start. I honestly don't understand all the harsh criticism: I know, it wasn't a perfect pilot episode, but all in all it was quite good. It has a great potential to grow and I was engaged from the get go because I wanted to know more about the characters and their back-story. Memory loss is a cliché, yes, but it can be handled appropriately to create a sense of mystery.

At first I was a little afraid all the action would take place on the ship they wake up, but in the end they visit a planet, which I why I love scifi in the first place: discovery. In some ways it reminded me of Firefly (it remains to be seen, of course, if it can reach such a level of greatness - probably not, but never say never). Even some characters, like the young girl with green hair (Jodelle Ferland) has a River Tam kinda vibe. And, you gotta admit, the android lady was a bit creepy, and transmitted the artificial intelligence uncanny valley quite well.

I would say give this TV show a chance before writing it off, maybe wait for a couple of episodes and see how it develops. The screenwriters are allegedly talented people with plenty of experience and if they manage to keep audiences interested, we might be looking at something great here. If not, well, thanks for trying.

A worthwhile action-packed sequel
6 May 2010 | by chrismsawin (United States) – See all my reviews

Robert Downey Jr was the best reason to watch the first Iron Man film since he seemed to slide into the role of Tony Stark so flawlessly and effortlessly. RDJ is just as amusing and fun to watch in Iron Man 2. If there were any doubts left over from RDJ's portrayal of Tony Stark from the first film, they're inevitably washed away with his convincing performance in the sequel. Newcomers Mickey Rourke, Sam Rockwell, and Scarlett Johansson are just as impressive. Rourke has been on an incredible streak since The Wrestler and puts in another solid performance here. His Russian accent is pretty spot on and he shows a wider range of emotion than you may not be expecting. Rockwell has been on my "actors to keep an eye on" radar since Confessions of a Dangerous Mind. I thoroughly enjoyed his smarmy performance as Hammer, who has all of the tools at his disposal to make as big of an impact on the world as Tony Stark has only to wind up falling short in the long run. The flirting between Tony and Johansson's Natalie Rushman is pretty captivating, but her crowning achievement is her fight scene in the latter half of the film that practically steals the show. Don Cheadle does have a few humorous one-liners and is great as War Machine, but doesn't really add anything that Terrence Howard already established with the role in the first film. It's slightly disappointing since Cheadle is known for his strong acting roles, but may be a result of the way the Capt. James Rhodes character was written for both films.

While the film is a worthy sequel, it does contain a few small flaws. What is it with Hollywood films lately having the climactic battle during the finale last five minutes or less? Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Clash of the Titans, and Iron Man 2 all share this trait. It doesn't take away from the fact that the conclusion to Iron Man 2 is still pretty satisfying, but my mindset seems dead set on thinking it's more satisfying when the antagonist has the advantage. He or she gains the upper hand and there's that moment where you think they may bring their evil plan to fruition before the protagonist outsmarts the antagonist for the win. When that last battle seems short, it makes it seem like the villain was all talk. Speaking of the action sequences though, they're spectacular and twice as big as the action in the original film. The problem is that the action seemed to get blurry during several of the more hefty action scenes. I'm not sure if it's because it's the way it was shot or what, but it made it seem like there was too much going on in the film to fully process in post-production or something.

Iron Man 2 is an extremely satisfying sequel on all accounts. While the original film is probably slightly better, the sequel does everything right and doubles up on everything in comparison; action, strong characters, teases for upcoming Marvel films, etc. Despite some of its early negative criticism, Iron Man 2 delivers a worthwhile sequel with a fantastic cast and spectacular action.

This film was compelling and had emotional weight.
6 April 2015 | by Ian Johnson (United States) – See all my reviews

The Woman in Gold is based on the true story about a woman, Maria Altmann (Helen Mirren), and her lawyer, Randol Schoenberg (Ryan Reynolds), as they attempt to reclaim ownership of an extremely valuable painting (along with a few more) form the Austrian government nearly fifty years after it was stolen by the Nazis. This film has three distinct parts that intertwine through the duration of the show. First, there is a family dynamic that focuses on the emotional stress of the current situation on everyone's personal lives. There is a strong connection between Randol and Maria that grows over time and is given time to grow in these segments. Second, there are flashbacks that dive deeper into Maria's past and emphasize the importance of the artwork as well as explore parallels between the past and the present. Finally there is the trial itself, which is where the action of the conflict lies. This is the least important, yet still necessary part of the story. The percentage of time given to these segments would be around 40/40/20, respectively. While you might be surprised how much of the story takes place in the past, it really does drive the plot. There are many white-knuckle scenes and heart wrenching moments that really add to the film. The past is just as important as the present in this movie, and that is exactly what the film is trying to say. Helen Mirren, as always, was amazing in this film. She was subtle and drove many of the scenes that required raw emotion. Ryan Reynolds was also very good and his role in this film might have been his best performance (from what I have seen). Actually, all of the actors did a fantastic job here. Everyone was on there A-Game and gave it everything they had. There was great chemistry between Mirren and Reynolds which made their characters' connection even more compelling. Reynolds was able to subtly change his character as the case slowly changed his motivations. While, yes, there are a few clichéd scenes that were put in there for emotional levity and drama, but they don't really take much away, if anything. This was an excellent film and I highly recommend it.

It has been too long since I laughed this hard and this much!
8 June 2013 | by charleshuber (United States) – See all my reviews

I had my reservations after reading the reviews. After watching the First episode, no doubt - funny and original. Make sure you stick around for the third and you will not be able to let it go.

Stereotypical characters in a brand new light. Excellent casting, perfectly matched the roles and the actors. The witty and snappy comments compliment the new character types not too often seen on TV. Original script with lines you can use in an everyday life. I must admit - I stole some and already used a few.

Without a doubt, one of the best progressive comedies as of late.

A must see! However, a warning: if you are accustomed to the typical, safe boilerplate comedies, this will probably not be for you. If you lack the necessary humor it could be viewed as extremely offensive on several levels - not intended as such. If you watch comedies for sex, turn on the porn channel, because this replaced most of the sex with wit and humor.

Great Medieval Fantasy Movie
6 February 2015 | by joshbull623 (United States) – See all my reviews

Went in with no expectations and was pleasantly surprised. No regrets paying to see it in theater which is more than I could say with the third hobbit movie. Reminds me of a merlin/arthur like film sprinkled in with some brothers grimm/season of the witch. Well done, nothing incredible, but no over the top or in my opinion failed special effects or actions. Nothing against any of the actors either. If I had to grade it as a movie over all, not a A but a solid B-B-. For what it did in the medieval fantasy genre especially compared to what we have seen from that genre as of late, it hits the A there sure. I recommend seeing it in theater, no IMAX or 3D, just standard showing though.

I love this
7 December 2014 | by themediaplanet90210 – See all my reviews

I just started watching the movie, but the first 6 minutes already made me want to write a review about this. This is the first movie review i am posting here, so please be kind.

I am a huge fan of Tom Sawyer, i have read the books as a child, and i have always imagined how things would look like if it was in a movie.

The thing that made me want to write this review was seeing Huckleberry Finn smoking the pipe. This was EXACTLY as i pictured him when i was reading the books. I also like the Becky actress a lot, and the kid playing Tom seems to be a pretty damn good portrayal of the Tom i always imagined.

I just hope i can edit this as i watch the movie, and i hope the movie will rise to my expectations but still, after the first 5 minutes i wanted to write this.

It's a film that promises but never fulfills the expectation of viewer. Abuse art "hand-held" and makes this type of film is not the novelty as if it was "The Blair Witch Project". On the other hand we must emphasize that were able to create the atmosphere a little too much favored by the good luck of the protagonists, but they failed to give a final chord and the little that is he had managed it was diluted in the final minutes. For lovers the genre "UFO" maybe they can find some nice, but not I think it is a part of the genre icon . The performances are not all bad for being a teen movie I finally left the each approach the final conclusion , really to me, not like me .

Nice try- but not quite there
4 April 2015 | by Revy Nu (United Kingdom) – See all my reviews

Real effort made with this series but first episode just too frantic- script just trying too hard!

Could have been really good but let down by very poor music score that is plain dull- see the original series to see how it's done.

In episode one someone forgot to put a bit of suspense and build up in. Hopefully better scripts to come but the dramatic "disaster" music and triumphant IR theme lost to a score that seems to have escaped from Disney's Frozen.

Models are a world apart from the sometimes flaky original series - but the attention to detail that inspired a generation of aero and space engineers was not there in this new series.

Maybe this attempt will inspire a new movie with live action - and erase the memory of the last catastrophe

Probably the fastest 93 minutes of my life !
26 April 2008 | by talanish (Travelling the world) – See all my reviews

Wow - I had already read reviews of this movie, and with the writer being one of my favourite directors, Luc Besson, I just had to go see this movie as soon as possible...

I was not disappointed... I'm not sure if this was intentional but there were no trailers before the movie, so being thrown strait into the film unexpectedly with people whispering "is this it then ?" only helping build up some initial tension and excitement.

The film starts nicely, but with overtones of spy thrillers like "Day of the Jackal" coming to mind. Neeson seems a bit pityful at the start, but soon overturns that impression with a taste of his handywork after around ten minutes of the thriller.

Then, before you know it, it's over. 93 minutes, gone in a blur of fighting, fear, chasing and excitement at serious pace. The artwork and direction is nicely done, giving you the feeling of being the one attacking and the chair squirming feeling of being the poor gits who get annihilated in almost every way possible.

It was one of those films that I wanted to applause after the film, I actually clapped about three times, but no-one joined in... too afraid of being the only two people clapping I suppose...

Neeson was great, and I can't wait to see the movie many more times. I only gave it 9 out of 10, as it was too short ! The film could have been easily stretched to 2 hours in my opinion, with some more development and intimacy with the
characters. But I guess this may have not made it so exciting... still, well worth the money to see this in the big screen.

Real Good Show
25 November 2012 | by Tallyortoby . (Europe) – See all my reviews

Living in Luxembourg I can watch this show on German TV. I stumbled on it for the 1st episode and got caught into it straight away. For a TV series it's amazing how it really tries to stick to the movies by having the main character live in the house on the Cote d'Azur that got blown up in one of the movies. Vance plays real good and the other actors do a fine job too. Great to see that François Berléand as Inspector Tarconi has been taken over from the movies into the series. I highly recommend watching this series as it evolves in a great way and the 6 episodes aired so far have been superb. Can't wait to see the next 6.

Not Great; but Not Bad
20 March 2015 | by Catt Jones (cattjones@chixchatonfilm.com) (TX, United States) – See all my reviews

This film pretty much picks right up where the last one ended with very little time lapse. Jeanine's (Kate Winslet) has issued an order that all divergents need to be killed until her soldiers find a box that was kept in Tris (Shailene Woodley) parents' house and she has discovers that she will need a divergent to open it. Tris, Four (Theo James), Caleb (Ansel Elgort) and Peter (Miles Teller) have found refuge in a little village governed by Johanna (Octavia Spencer) until the hunting begins. Eric (Jai Courtney) and Max (Mekhi Phifer) have retained their blind loyalty to Jeanine; however I think that Eric has gotten even nastier whereas Max is just trying to do his job. I have to say that loyalty is a big element in this film….. you just never know. This film actually kept up a good pace and there was very little lull time. They said that there would be a lot more action in this film. I don't know about "a lot" more, but there was definitely more than the last one. I was also glad to see that Tris was no longer wimpy when it came down to fighting, however emotionally she was feeling pretty guilty. They really beat that dead horse throughout the film. I did not see this film in 3D, but because of all the special effect, that might have been a mistake. Man, computer generated imagery has sure come along way. It really makes me look forward to some of the upcoming films this summer like Jurassic World and Terminator. I am happy for my fellow German director Robert Schwentke who has successfully bounced back from that armpit of a film, Rest in Peace Department, RIPD for short, that he directed back in 2013. You can only go up from that one. Anyway, I think that this film will do well especially with the "tween" crowd; and once you've invested in the series it's kind of hard to not find out what happens next. Do I think that this film was one of the best films I've seen this year……. Nope, but it was entertaining and didn't suck. I don't recommend that you see this film if you haven't seen Divergent. This one holds its own, but you'll enjoy it more if you've seen the first one.

JURASSIC PARK 3 / (2001) *** (out of four)

By Blake French:

"Jurassic Park 3" is not as good as the first but a whole lot better than the second. It's also the first film in the series that is not based on a novel by Michael Crichton. That's basically "JP3" in a nutshell. It's not necessarily a great movie, nor does it break any new grounds of adventure or take many risks, but it does take advantage of all the creative ideas. You will not hear anyone in the audience complain that the movie isn't inventive, because these writers, Peter Buchman, Alexander Payne, and Jim Taylor, really have an imagination.

The story takes place eight years after the incident at Jurassic Park. Dr. Alan Grant (Sam Neill) still works as a paleontologist on dinosaur dig sites in Montana with his young assistant Billy (Alessandro Nivola). He's offered a good sum of money by a wealthy couple (William H. Macy and Tea Leoni) who want Grant to guild them on a flight over Isla Sorna-also owned by the dinosaur cooperation. Sam agrees, but once over the island, something goes wrong and he's once again stuck on the dinosaur infested territory fighting for his life.

"Jurassic Park 3" is complied with stunning brevity. The dialogue is concise and doesn't wonder. The character's relationships are instantly obvious. It's very clear that this film is shorter, cheaper, and more simple than its predecessors. That is not such a bad thing. The second Jurassic Park was terrible-an all star cast placed in situation and situation where they run from big monstrous creatures. Although "Jurassic Park 3" is more or less the same formula, it gets sassy and fresh. Eye-popping special effects involve everything from a bird-dinosaur attempting to feed a human to its babies to a massive battle between a Tyrannosaurus Rex and a new breed of lizard called Spinosaurus. Some of these scenes do not really work. Amazingly, many succeed.

I have various complaints about the movie. There are not enough violent encounters to keep the audiences interested throughout. Unlike the first two films, the dinos in "JP3" only eat a handful of characters and they occur in the opening half hour. You can probably guess the characters who meet a graphic demise; anyone who is billed in the film's credits that you have heard of will probably live. I also think the movie needs more thrills. It seems as if the producers are more interested in proving to the audience that these dinosaurs are really smart rather than focusing on lean, clean terror.

Regardless of the pictures many problems, during a summer movie season jam-packed with special effects extravaganzas that don't work ("The Mummy Returns," "Pearl Harbor," "Planet of the Apes," "The Fast and he Furious," and "Swordfirsh" to name a few) finally comes one that does. I recommend "Jurassic Park 3" on the basis that you don't expect something remotely as fascinating as the original, but still hunger for a shallow 90 minute thrill ride.

Great tribute, but movie was just another movie.
3 April 2015 | by Ty Z (United States) – See all my reviews

While the ending to Furious 7 was executed extremely well, the same cannot be said for the rest of the movie. The acting fell flat and it was nothing more than a two and a half hour long soap opera that has started since the franchise stopped racing cars. The loves scenes became ridiculous and the car action increased in more B.S. than Congress. The movie recycled every cliché in the book.

The fighting actions that involved Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) was welcoming. Jason was Deckard during those moments and he played the part well. All the random moments where he would show meant you knew it was about to go down. When he appears, action is none stop between Domini Toretto (Vin Diesel) and Deckard Shaw, with the fighting between the two intensify with every encounter.

Furious 7 has an incredible tribute to a man that was loved by many and he deserved nothing less. But that alone cannot make this movie be worthy of anything higher than a 7.

An excellent sleeping pill.

Battle for SkyArk: a movie with no battle for the aforementioned Ark. All we get are a handful of kid bums with laughable weaponry, pitted against unconvincing "monsters" who could die... of laughter when they see the so-called weapons. The whole movie drags through, the one massive monster is yet another take on the guy-turned-giant-monster- with-mask-and giant-weapon we've seen hundreds of times, from Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome to the Resident Evil and Silent Hill movies/games franchise. No development at all, just kids scurrying through what seems to be a huge junkyard. I had few hopes, considering the score given by other viewers, but I didn't think it'd be such a sad sight. The kids do what they can, I won't throw them the stones, they're all very young actors. Whoever made the movie though, should consider a change of career and run said junkyard instead. At least, they'd get an honest pay for piles of rubbish.

Movie Reviews :

A title that compliments the writing quite nicely
7 March 2015 | by Steve Pulaski (United States) – See all my reviews

"Unfinished Business" is a landmark film for one reason and one reason only, and it's the first directorial effort by Ken Scott that doesn't have a plot or a title related to sperm. After directing both the Canadian film "Starbuck" and the American remake "Delivery Man," Scott has set his sights on another subject that, unfortunately, gets bogged down by not only its dirty-minded tendencies but its directionless comedy and narrative as well. "Unfinished Business" is a miserably unfunny film, lumbering from one situation to the next in a stumblebum fashion, making ninety minutes out to be an absolutely laborious affair on all counts.

The film focuses on Daniel Trunkman (Vince Vaughn), who quits his job after his boss Chuck Portnoy (Sienna Miller) tries to make him accept a five percent pay deduction. Just before walking out, he proclaims to his former coworkers that he is working on starting his own business and that anyone who wants to work for a fairer, more honest company should follow him out the door. He's followed by Timothy McWinters (Tom Wilkinson), an elderly man who was also just let go, and Mike Pancake (Dave Franco), a quirky, shy youngster who was interviewing for the business that same day. We fast-forward one year later, seeing the three as broke and clueless as when they started, with their only hope of achieving some income after two stagnant months is a trip to Europe to close the business deal they need in order to continue. Daniel keeps reiterating time and time again that the agreement is only a "handshake" away, but, as expected, and this goes without saying, a load of ridiculous bawdiness follows them overseas and they are left with their own wits and ridiculousness to try and make this deal work.

You may be asking yourself what business are these men in, what is their company about, and what does this insurmountable business deal consist of? You're not alone, reader; I was asking the very same questions while watching the film. Writer Steve Conrad (the same man who penned "The Pursuit of Happiness" and "The Promotion," which detailed something similar to this story in a more entertaining and empathetic way) dances around these ideas, with Daniel, at one point in the film, saying him and his two coworkers are in the business of selling "swarf," or the stray metal shavings that turn up in mass amounts following the construction of a building, a bridge, or some other societal necessity. After that point is established, none the previous questions get answered. The three men talk about how revolutionary this business deal is if it goes through, but nobody takes the time to explain its effects, the monetary impact, what the three men have been doing for the past year while their business sinks like a rock, and so on.

Conrad engages in some of the laziest screen writing I've seen, not only in a narrative sense where nothing is explained or elaborated on, but in the sense that the film never manages to be funny. It lumbers through sight gags and attempts at humor that are so frequently dead-on-arrival I wanted to check the film for a pulse. The only performer on hand that seems to be trying to create some level of character is Dave Franco, an actor I've appreciated in his last few film roles as a goofy soul who can play both clueless but confident or clueless and intimidated very well. Here, he's the latter, and he's often fun when he's responding so nervously to Daniel's requests or must recite his full name (which isn't funny, but the film keeps trying to assert that it is) in the middle of a meeting.

With that, "Unfinished Business" packs nothing but an exhausting array of failed jokes and an empty plot that its caricatures certainly can't rebound and its writing/directing team sure can't save once the cameras begin rolling. To the surprise of some, I'm sure, I defended the last two major raunchy comedies that have been released to theaters, "Hot Tub Time Machine 2" and "The Wedding Ringer," respectively, crediting them for doing their job in not only making me laugh but packing in a little extra something to their formula. "Unfinished Business" is so broken and empty that it can't pack anything extra into its story or formula because there's already so little there. It works as a perfect juxtaposition to the characters' company in the film, as it's a trainwreck that has an audience and nothing more.

The usual craps by Asylum
24 May 2015 | by Ki Ageng Gurubesar (Canada) – See all my reviews

There are 2 things that you have to keep in mind when you are watching this movie. First; it is made by a company called Asylum and second; don't get excited by the pamphlet which is showing people hanging out on a chopper.

As with all the other movies made by Asylum, you have to understand this is a B grade movie. I don't even know if this kind of movies will see the day they deserve in the cinemas. For a company who has made hundreds of movies, I am really surprise that they have never graduated from the B grade or just quit the business of making movie. Surely they must understand that making a crappy movie will mean loosing money.

There is no logic in this movie, there is no plot and I don't even know what the story is about, except it is about the famous San Andreas Fault. Most of us have seen the picture of devastation in 1906 during the California's earth quake caused by similar San Andreas fault. The whole city was destroyed. But not in the case with this movie. Of course there are some CGI scenes with the collapsed building, broken road, damaged bridges and fires (although I have no idea, why there is always fire) and to complete the danger, a high voltage cable which is floating around to kill people.

It is always a disgraced brilliant scientist which no one believe who developed the method of finding the most important information to support the story. Since nobody believe her, our hero has to go half across the state of California to save her family. I am not sure who give the background information on the technology, but when your cellphone does not work, logically the wireless equipment also not working ? Right ? Wrong...., because in this movie, your cellphone quit working but your other wireless equipment will also quit working, but not in this case; the wireless equipment that is showing the earth-quake keeps on having the internet connection and feeding the data as well even after the big quake happens.

Of all the things that defy the logic, I would not think that in the earth-quake situation, you will try to go through the underground tunnel to reach a place. I would have thought underground tunnel is one of the most dangerous place to be, but not in this movie. All in all, I know this is a movie and you expect exaggeration on the story, but Asylum is really making this movie with the assumption that most (if not all) the viewers are stupid idiot.

I wonder, whether in real life this kind of movies really has any fans. To copy-cat the movie is okay, but do it with more effort, not just with the attitude of neither here nor there.....

Paranoid Android
26 April 2015 | by themissingpatient (Canada) – See all my reviews

Ex Machina has a very fitting sense of false intimacy. This is done visually as many of the close-ups are seen through glass. No matter how close we get to the subject on-screen, there always seems to be at least one wall of glass between us and it or them. The film also makes a very distinct contrast between it's interior and exterior shots. Outside of the facility is breathtaking landscapes. It is big, beautiful, refreshing and vibrant. Inside seems like an endless futuristic maze of glass, mirrors, plastic, chrome and dim lights. It is clean, cold and claustrophobic. A perfect setting for the subject that is explored in this tight, tense sci-fi thriller.

Ex Machina is the best science fiction film on artificial intelligence since Blade Runner. While Blade Runner is an action thriller that relies more on it's epic visuals to tell it's story, Ex Machina is a dialogue-driven psychological thriller that slowly works it's way under your skin. Thought-provoking and terrifyingly suspenseful, an induced state of paranoia may linger long after the end credits begin to roll.

The less you know going into a film like this, the better your experience will be. Alex Garland has given us a modern science-fiction masterpiece. Performances from all three leads are flawless and every other aspect of the production, from the cinematography to the soundtrack, is perfectly suited for the story. Not only is Ex Machina an amazing achievement for a directorial debut, it's Alex Garland's best written work to-date.
